What ‘Penetration’ Actually Means

“Penetrates deep into the skin” shows up on ingredient decks for products that have no business penetrating deep into anything — a mineral SPF, for instance, whose entire mechanism depends on staying at the surface. The phrase has drifted into meaning something like “works well,” which is a problem, because penetration depth is one of the few claims in skincare that is actually measurable.

In formulation science, how far an ingredient reaches depends on molecular weight, lipophilicity (how well it dissolves in the skin’s own lipids versus water), concentration, and the vehicle it is delivered in. Zinc oxide particles are large and are formulated specifically not to penetrate — that is the point of a physical sunscreen. Sodium hyaluronate at high molecular weight sits mostly at the surface; hydrolyzed (low molecular weight) sodium hyaluronate is small enough to reach further into the viable epidermis. Retinol is lipophilic and small enough to reach the epidermis and, with consistent use, influence fibroblast activity in the dermis below — but it gets there by being converted through several intermediate forms, not by diffusing straight down.

This is the whole reason our cross-section diagram exists: “penetrates deep” is not a real spec. “Formulated to reach the epidermis” or “formulated to remain in the corneum” are specs, and they are different claims for different ingredients doing different jobs. A barrier cream that reached the dermis would not be doing its job better — it would be doing an entirely different, unintended thing.

When you read an ingredient claim anywhere, including on our own labels, the useful question is not “how deep” as a generic virtue, but “deep enough for what this ingredient is actually supposed to do here.” Sometimes the right answer is fifteen micrometres.
